Paranormal research investigators are critical

Ghost Tours of Kansas has been running for four years now. I was lucky enough to get a chance to tag along with them for a brand new investigation of a 120 year-old Kansas City, Kansas Catholic Church. But I had to get my bearings on the paranormal history that investigators say emanate from Kansas City.

"Kansas City, Kansas is the most haunted city in Kansas," said Beth Cooper of Ghost Tours of Kansas.

But, I learned there is no documentation of happenings at the church we were going to. And that's why paranormal research investigators were along. I found out that the investigators are tough critics of the supernatural.

"Just all the sudden jumping to the conclusion of a ghost is not always the right one...or paranormal...is not always the right one...there is a lot of other explanations," said Nick Spantgos.

We had many instruments to help us figure out if the only explanation is, in fact, paranormal. Spantgos told me about one of the main tools.

"This is an EMF [Electromagnetic Field] detector. It is a digital EMF detector, so we can put real numbers behind the EMF fields that we might experience. The theory is that ghosts are made of energy and these can detect them," said Spantgos.

Nick also showed me the IR camera, that can see in the dark, and his Electronic Voice Phenomena, or EVP, recorder, a recorder that can detect sounds not heard by the human ear.

What was most astonishing was that the actual investigation was only about 10 to 20 percent of the total work involved. All the rest of the work occurs in the days of analysis thereafter. And only with tangible evidence will the group determine a place to be haunted.
