"It's a little disturbing, but I think that if you just hang on and be patient, things will straighten out okay," said Eldon Wood.

He and his wife Frances have lost thousands since the nation's financial meltdown and record drops in the Dow. But Frances says they're not joining in on the panic on Wall Street. Frances isn't worried.

"It is risky but if you don't have to sell, which we're in a position right now where we don't have to sell, just wait it out," she said.

This couple does much of their own research on what to buy and sell, but admit they like having an actual person they can talk to when there's turmoil in the markets. That's what places like Topeka's new Scottrade branch offers.

"We were very happy when we saw this sign come up, because we've been customers now for four or five years and it would be so convenient to have them here," Frances said.

For Scottrade, despite what the markets are doing, it's business as usual.

"Scottrade really hasn't been affected by what's going on. People continue to trade and they still need to invest their money and get a good return," said branch manager Ryan Webb.

Webb says they opened the office because they had customers using the online trading service and wanted to be available as a resource.

"We had a large existing customer base here in Topeka and continued to get quite a bit of interest in the area," he says.

Despite the panic on Wall Street, Frances and Eldon have recouped some of their losses and still like making their own financial decisions.

"I felt more comfortable doing it myself than having someone else manage your affairs," says Eldon.
