A new Kansas Turnpike exit will be the first to be run solely by machines.
The exit at mile 212 in Leavenworth County is under construction, but the $16.7 million project will be finished at the end of next year.
The plan is to have no employees there, and that's part of a larger effort by the Turnpike Authority to reduce its staff of toll-takers from 200 to 180. The authority also plans to eliminate low-traffic shifts at 10 exits.
The machines will tell drivers by video how to insert Turnpike tickets and will take coins, bills or credit cards for payment.
Drivers won't be completely left in the dark.
Employees at other locations will still be available by video and audio to answer question.
