An advocacy group says Kansas falls short in helping children before they reach kindergarten but is making gains.
Pre [K] Now, based in Washington, ranks Kansas as one of the five worst states in the nation for parents seeking a high-quality, state-funded pre-kindergarten program. Oklahoma was rated among the best.
The report noted that, as of 2007, the state's program met only three of 10 national benchmarks for quality. But, it said, the state also was pursuing improvements.
And the report noted that the pre-K program in Kansas enjoys bipartisan support. Also, this school year, the state is spending $11.1 million on grants for early childhood programs, up from $3 million during the 2007-08 school year.
