KTKA no longer on Dish lineup

"Especially football season, that's a bad time to be going out."

"Especially football season, that's a bad time to be going out," said Patrick Pruett, Dish Network subscriber.

Pruett was looking forward to day of relaxing at home and watching bowl games.

"I figured there was some football on your channel, we turned over and there was nothing there except some guy explaining something," Pruett said.

That guy is Eric Sahl. He is the the vice president of programming for Dish Network. If you are a Dish Network subscriber he's just about all you'll see on KTKA, for now. Sahl's message is clear, he says KTKA's parent company is asking for too much money to carry ABC on Dish Network.

"You've probably tuned in today to see your local ABC station KTKA Channel 49...We no longer have the legal right to carry this station. I can assure you that at Dish Network, we've made every effort to reach an agreement for continued carriage of this channel," Sahl said.

But Patrick Knorr, chief operating officer of KTKA's parent company, Free State Communications, sees the Dish blackout as a negotiating tactic.

"They're choosing to take a heavy-handed route and try to strong arm a small company, which they even communicated to us that we're a small company, we're in a small market and we're independent, so they don't feel they need to negotiate with us or pay us in the same manner they pay larger broadcasting companies," Knorr said.

Knorr says that KTKA's parent company is asking for about 25 cents per subscriber and Dish's counter-offer has been closer to 15 cents per subscriber.

To Pruett, it's the viewers who really lose.

"Everybody wants money, especially in this economy, it just annoys me that they can't reach a decision. There comes a point in time where you say enough's enough," said Pruett

Pruett doesn't know who to blame, but hopes the blackout will end soon. Both sides say it's up to the other to decide how long the stalemate will last.

In my opinion, It seems to me that Dish Network has come to an agreement with all other local channels so this is your holdup not Dish. "Choosing a heavy handed route to strong arm a small company"? What is so small about your company? In all honesty, it really doesn't bother me, I don't watch your channel anyway.

ABC or Dish Network should offer subscribers another ABC feed until they get their contract resolved. I, as a subscriber, should not have to be punished for the dispute. There are many other ABC options and ways to get us the feed, even if it is an hour ahead or behind, so I do not have to miss my programming.

Come on KTKA get with the program, the other Topeka stations worked it out. When your sponsers start dropping your shows because the DISH customers are calling them and complaining things might change. But if dish opens another ABC station up then it will be your loss.

If you call dish you will get a credit on your bill for as long as KTKA is not on the lineup.

I am a dish network owner and am very displeased with the demands from both parties regarding our service. We expect a fair agreement will be made with them so that we may recieve service. If no agreement is made soon we will start contacting all other dish providers, tv stations, advertisers, and newspapers. It is not my job to help you negotiate the service that I am not recieveing and currently paying for.

http://abc.go.com/ - go to this address and set up to view on your PC. If you really want to.....hook your PC up to your large flat screen TV as a display and watch ABC programming whether Dish & KTKA pull their heads out or not. Note KTKA has killed the feed on their site...another indication of just how cooperative they are being in the negotiations. What goes around, comes around....the furniture I had picked out at Discovery? I took a look at another site.....I'll buy from them...anyone else, but not Discovery/Slumberland/Roommakers. Anyone who is contributing to holding subscribers hostage should feel the sting of it...what a way to treat potential customers.....if I can't get it here....I can always get it another way. Yes, it is a little cumbersome....but I was giggling the whole time I was setting it up. Be empowered....be creative....but the greedy SOBs that are causing this will pay in other ways. Did you notice that folks aren't buying as much gas because they oil companies got so greedy? Well, they found other ways to be entertained.....viewers will catch on too. Dana....you are doing a fine job of turning around Channel 49's spiral.....
