49 Storm Team Forecast: Wicked Winter Cold Front!
6:37 p.m. Saturday, January 3, 2009
Just look at the temperature contrast across Northeast Kansas Saturday at 3 p.m. Notice how warm it was in the east, and how cold it was in the west. The temperature difference across the area range almost forty to fifty degrees! The cold front sliced through Topeka around 3 p.m. Saturday; not before we reached a near-record high of 63 F!
Even more shocking was what your body would have felt, the wind chill. The combination of the wind and falling temperatures behind the front made it feel like only 8 F, yes 8 F, in Concordia at 3 p.m.. Meanwhile, if you were getting into your car at MCI Airport, in Kansas City, you could have rolled your car windows down. By the time you got home to Concordia, your body would have been shocked by what "felt" nearly like a seventy-degree temperature drop! A front like this occurs only a few times a year, if at all.
Northeast Kansas was not alone in experiencing this huge temperature division. The contrast of warm and cold air fueled a storm; producing heavy snow and ice in the Upper Great Lakes Region, and severe weather along the Gulf Coast. Good news: this storm will kick on out of the central portion of the U.S. in 24 hours!
Tonight: Blustery! Much colder! Lows between 15-20 degrees. Windchill values as cold as zero in some locations! Gusty Northwest winds at 15-30 mph.
Sunday: Blustery! Much colder (nearly thirty degrees colder in many places)! Highs around 30 F. Northwest winds at 15-30 mph.
Sunday night: Winds weakening. Lows around 16 F.
No more big temperature swings expected this week. In fact, the weather is looking quiet. No big storms are expected at this point across Northeast Kansas: that's okay, enough weather drama with Saturday's wicked winter cold front!
