Sports league for average Joes

In Topeka, the Adult Hockey League brings people of all ages and locations together.

Beer League sports...usually, that means adult softball. But in Topeka, the Adult Hockey League brings people of all ages and locations together.

"We have a 60 year-old guy that's been playing here for a few years now, and he gets better and better every year and he's out just enjoying it as much as everyone else is," Dutch Goose captain Glen Kipp said.

"We have people from all over, Manhattan, Kansas City, Wamego, Junction City, Emporia, guys just come all around to play. It's kind of a release from the stress of the work week, and everything. It's just a lot of fun," league member Jim Griffith said.

Every year, the numbers continue to grow, for a variety of reasons. One of those is how balanced the league is.

At the beginning of every year, a draft is held.

"All the players are ranked based on their skill from A-D, A being the best, D being the worst. All of them are kind of put into a hat and they do a draft at the beginning of the year and split up the teams as about as evenly as possible as they can," Griffith said.

But perhaps the most unique part of this league is the championship trophy. No, that's not the Stanley Cup. It's the Bob Owen Memorial Cup. Look closely and you'll see it's made of a polished up beer keg and a few salad bowls on top.

"Got a plaque on it that is Bob Owen Memorial Cup. Bob Owen was with the 1960 US Olympic team that won gold, and we kind of made it as his memorial cup," Kipp said.

So, the next time you're looking for an adult league to join, you don't have to wait until summer softball starts up. The Adult Hockey League always accepts new players, even if you are one of those "D" rated player.
