Toddler dies after run over by car

A toddler died from head trauma sustained after run over by a car Saturday night, July 11, 2009. The family's home was broken in, while at the hospital.

At 10:20 PM, Saturday night, July 11, 2009, the Topeka Police responded to call of medical assistance at 226 SE 34th. Upon arrival, along with emergency medical responders, officers found a child had suffered massive trauma to his head. As the details were revealed through investigation, the child, a toddler, was struck when a driver was moving a vehicle in the driveway of 226 SE 34th. The child was transported to a local hospital. He did not survive the injury.

Investigation determined Raul A. Retana-Vasquez, 25 years of age, was the driver of the vehicle and he was arrested. He was charged with Involuntary Manslaughter While Driving Under the Influence of Alcoholic Beverages and booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections.

Police are continuing to investigate and ask that anyone with information call detectives at 368-9400 or Crime Stoppers at 234-0007.
