Topeka A Topeka man is asking others to help give destitute veterans the burials they deserve.
55-year old William Foley is a Vietnam veteran, who stepped forward 11 years ago to help with the funeral and burial costs of 75-year old Alfred A. Williams. Williams had left behind no funds to cover costs and no family members stepped forward to help.
"It made me mad," says Foley, who goes by the nickname Shay. "That a veteran of our armed services, whether it be army, navy, air force, marine corps or coast guard. These men have laid their life on the line. They signed on the dotted line that said that they would do that. Whatever they did, whether it was wartime or peacetime, they deserve this much."
Foley is taking donations through Sunday at Larry's Shortstop at 3840 SW Topeka Boulevard. Or, you can donate to the Alfred A. Williams Memorial Fund at any CoreFirst Bank location.
