49 Movie Review - The Proposal

'The Proposal' wins you over (Three out of four stars)

In "The Proposal," Sandra Bullock plays Margaret, a high-powered book editor facing deportation to Canada. After some quick thinking, she announces to her bosses that she is engaged to marry her assistant Andrew played by Ryan Reynolds, the only way she can stay in the country and keep her job.

Andrew agrees to the plan, but has a few things he wants for himself. He wants his book published, along with a promotion to fully fledged editor. This could be Andrew's one chance to garner the credit he wants for his talent and to get payback for the abuse he has taken over the years as Margaret's assistant.

The two take off to meet Andrew's family in Alaska and to celebrate his grandmother's (played by Betty White) 90th birthday. In between all of the chaos these two polar opposite people begin to see each other in a different light and true feelings begin to surface.

There is no new ground broke with "The Proposal," but you do get a very funny, quick paced romantic comedy that is immensely entertaining. Normally films like this annoy me because I've seen it many times before, but this one grew on me. As the time went by the movie began to charm me with its cheerful demeanor, and you begin to like these characters and have fun with them along the way.

Sandra Bullock is likeable even as a callous boss and her chemistry with co-star Ryan Reynolds is the strength of the film. Bullock is one of the most talented, likeable actresses out there who has remained popular with moviegoers despite a lack of quality script choices over the years. She seems to be getting more beautiful and distinguished as the years go by. I just wish she would take more chances like she did with the film "Murder by Numbers" where she played a troubled and at times not so likeable character. I personally would love to see her try another action flick, because thankfully by now most have forgotten about "Speed 2."

The strong supporting cast includes Malin Akerman, Mary Steenbergen, Craig T. Nelson, and the incomparable Betty White, all of whom rise above the simplistic plot. When you look at this cast you realize the studio knew the script was nothing new so they go out and get a talented group of actors to carry it out and it worked in this case.

I found "The Proposal" to be charming even with the preposterous storyline that has been done to death. In the end, Sandra Bullock, Ryan Reynolds and the rest of the cast won me over and, while it won't change your life or make you think, it will entertain and make you smile.
