Topeka Topekans are trying to beat the heat - and protect themselves from it.
Local swimming pools are popular places, but those not able to spend a day at the pool are trying to cope the best they can.
The Red Cross is ready to help, with its annual fan giveaway, and the Salvation Army is offering a place for people to cool off.
"So we've opened our facility, sort of as a cooling center, where people can come and get out of the heat, and we also have water for them," said Teresa Bardwell of the Salvation Army.>
The Salvation Army facility is located at 1320 Southeast 6th.
Health experts say the heat is dangerous, and you need to be aware of your body's warning signs.
"You'll sweat more, and when you've sweated all you can, you'll stop sweating and you'll notice fatigue, exhaustion, you need to sit down," said Dr. Mike Pfannenstiel of Stormont Vail.
Kansas Health officials also remind you to not only watch out for yourself, but also your neighbors. If you know someone without air conditioning, talk to them about getting to a cooler place.
