Welding is for girls
High school girls from across the state are learning new crafts, like how to weld a picture frame.
High school girls are experiencing a first this week by taking part in welding and carpentry classes at the Manhattan Area Technical College.
72 girls 9th and 10th grade girls are spending a week at K-State for EXCITE, a program to encourage girls to learn science by giving them hands-on experiences.
Today some of the girls learned to weld a picture frame. They'll also be making tool boxes and working with engines.
"I came here last year to the camp and I thought it was really cool and really fun," Krista Sheuerman, a sophomore from Deerfield said. "I just like to do all this kind of stuff, mess with metal, you know, and get to learn how to do stuff and take stuff apart and put it back together and see why it works."
This is the 7th year for the summer workshop, which was started by two KSU professors who thought kids needed more hands-on activity instead of sitting in front of a computer.
