Teen found 5 hours after search and rescue crews began
A 15 year old girl was found safe 5 hours after her friends said she went for a swim and never came back.
Crews searched Lake Sherwood all morning looking for a 15 year old girl who went missing after telling friends she was going for a swim. "3 juveniles who were roughly the teenagers year by the water, and indicated that a friend, one of the girls had gone into the lake and went out for a swim for a little bit. They were trying to get her to come in, and they lost sight of her and never did see her come out of the water," Sergeant Christopher Keys.
Based on that information the Sheriff's department called in back up from Mission Township Fire department's water rescue team. The Kansas Highway patrol assisted by helicopter to search the area, along with the Topeka Police Department. "Searched the water, our officers searched the surrounding area, the water's edge, locations around houses looking for the girl," Keys said.
5 hours after responders showed up on scene, the girl was found, okay. "Over in the 4200 Block of Urish called in that he contacted a young female there that identified herself as the girl we were looking for," Keys said.
The girl had what investigators say are minor injuries.
They are not sure why she ended up where she did, but are investigating why she left and didn't contact anyone. Right now there are no charges against the teen, and the sheriff's department say they like these endings. "This is the way we always like it to turn out we always hope for the best."
