Watching a cold front to end the boiling heat

49 Meteorologist Alex Harrington explains just what we have to get through in order to enjoy cooler and less humid weather.

A cold front is on it's way to Northeast Kansas. All our heat and humidity will really focus right up against the front by Saturday afternoon. Some places along and southeast of the Kansas Turnpike will see the temperatures peak near 100°F, with heat index values pushing 110°F. The Excessive Heat Warning will stay in effect for those areas. However, places north and west of the Kansas Turnpike will see the humidity begin to drop by late Saturday afternoon. The front will also spark thunderstorm chances.

A few storms, some severe, may fire along the front after three, or so, Saturday afternoon. Some gusty winds may accompany the storms, but widespread severe weather is looking unlikely at this point. The storms will draw a lot of the heat out of the area by Sunday.

Saturday: Excessive Heat Warning continues along and southeast of the Kansas Turnpike. Turning cooler and less humid north and west late. A few storms possible along the turnpike after 3 p.m. Highs around 97°F for Topeka, and points southeast; closer to 90°F far northwest.

Saturday night: Evening storm chances clear the turnpike. Cooler. Less humid. Lows around 67°F. Northwest breezes at 15-25 mph.

Cooler and less humid weather stick around through at least Wednesday of next week. Those muggy readings will creep back in, along with storm chances, by later Wednesday and Thursday. Some of the storms Wednesday and Thursday could be on the stronger side. Stay tuned.
