Topeka reacts to possible tax increase for buses

Topeka reacts to possible tax increase for buses.

Bernadette Lewis says she's had enough already.

"I own a little house and they keep raising my property taxes every year," said Lewis.

She understands that a lot of public agencies are in financial straights right now, but so is everyone else.

"They'll just have to manage on the funds they have, just like the rest of us," said Lewis.

Bernadette says especially after a sales tax increase that she didn't vote for, she opposes the idea of any tax increase.

"They need to find a different way to raise the funds for the bus transportation rather than raise property taxes. I think everybody in Topeka pays enough property taxes as it is," said Lewis.

Although she does think a city transportation system is important.

"For a lot of school kids and people that don't have their own transportation, it's a necessity," said Lewis.

But James Roberson says he's happy to pay a little extra to keep the buses.

"Without it, I think we would see a lot of people losing out in their areas of employment and a lot of children will have no way to get to school," said Roberson.

James has ridden the bus for 10 years and likes the transit system, but he says raising taxes should be the last alternative.

"From what I see and what I've read, there are none," Roberson said.

Bernadette does use the bus occasionally, but for her it's a matter of fiscal responsibility for local government.

"I don't know what they do with them, how the manage their funds and their money. They don't seem to get anything fixed right," said Lewis.
