How Fort Riley is responding to Fort Hood incident

"Our Fort Hood teammates are resilient and they will bounce back," Monte Volk, with the U.S. Army Garrison Public Affairs, said.

Thursday November 5, 12 soldiers and one civilian were killed and 30 others were wounded when a Fort Hood soldier opened fire on post.

Fort Riley officials say these fellow soldiers are in their prayers and their focus is protecting their own troops.

How Fort Riley is responding to Fort Hood incident

The tragedy at Fort Hood is affecting army installations around the nation. 49 News Manhattan Bureau Reporter Lindsey Elliott got an exclusive interview with a Fort Riley official who explains how security has changed and how Fort Riley is helping Fort Hood.

"The safety and well-being of our soldiers, families and civilian employees is a primary concern," Volk said.

To keep those soldiers focused on training instead of worrying about their safety, Fort Riley is changing their security at the entrances.

"Fort Riley remains an open post but we have adjusted some security measures," Volk said.

Fort Riley has entrances on Huebner Street, at 12th street, at Henry gate and at the intersection of Grant Avenue and Washington Street in Junction City. Each Army installation decides what kind of security measures will be used at these entrances. At Fort Riley, a driver’s license is required and they will be checking more cars as they enter.

"We have increased the frequency of random checks at our gates," Volk said.

They’re also lending a hand to Fort Hood.

"We have been asked by higher headquarters to assist Fort Hood by providing two chaplains and one psychiatrist to help with grief counseling," Volk said.

While the Big Red One soldiers continue to train, they are also thinking about the soldiers at Fort Hood.

"Our thoughts and prayers go out to our teammates in Fort Hood, Texas," Volk said.

Fort Riley will continue to assess threats and make adjustments as needed.
