Standing in a long line is a blessing for mother of five, Judy Clingman. She said she’d be lost without it.
“I'd be trying to scrimp and save some money to have my kids a Christmas,” she said.
Needy families wait in long line to get help for Christmas
Hundreds of families in Topeka are struggling to find ways to provide a Merry Christmas for their children, but they are getting help through a local program.
But, she and other needy families don't have to worry. They lined up to get help for the holidays through the Christmas Bureau. It's a program where low-income families are adopted by others in the community to receive food and gifts.
“My daughter still believes in Santa Claus and it's important to her so it's important to me,” said Angel Camfield, who signed up for the Christmas Bureau.
To qualify, folks have to show a proof of income, social security cards for all family members and an I-D.
Jamie Hornbaker with the United Way said the line is always long on the first day to sign up, even though it doesn't have to be.
“The Christmas Bureau isn't first-come, first-serve,” she said.
With the down economy, she said there are more people in need this year.
But, she said the biggest challenge will be finding people in the community who can afford to adopt these needy families.
Hornbaker adopted a single mom and two children last year.
She said it was a rewarding experience.
“They were so appreciative,” Hornbaker said. “It felt really good to be able to give back when this community has given me so many opportunities and so much.”
And these families say the support from the Topeka community makes a big difference on Christmas Day.
“She's really happy because she doesn't really expect to get very much and she gets more than she expected,” said Camfield.
“I think it really makes the kids happy,” said Robin Proudfoot. “It’s what it’s all about.”
