Topeka Zoo says gorilla died from aneurysm

A gorilla that died at the Topeka Zoo on Saturday died from an aneurysm.

K-State's school of Veterinary Medicine says gross necropsy findings indicate M'bili died from a rupture of an aortic aneurysm. The zoo says histopathology results are pending and will be provided when available with in the next few weeks.

The zoo's staff found M'Bili dead in his quarters at around 7:30 a.m. on Saturday. They say he was not showing any signs of illness or distress. M'Bili was 17 years and 8 months when he died.

The gorilla was born at the San Diego Wild Animal Park on February 15, 1992. He lived there until his arrival at the Topeka Zoo in December of 2001.

The zoo still has one Lowland gorilla, Tiffany.
