Brian Hart, a spokesman for U.S. Senator Sam Brownback, said Monday that the Haitian government and the U.S. State Dept. were being "cooperative" in the case of Drew Culberth.
Culberth, 30, is a father of four and a Topeka firefighter. He is one of ten Baptist missionaries jailed after being accused of trying to take 33 children out of earthquake-ravaged Haiti.
According to Hart, at issue is a paperwork problem. Hart believed that Culberth's group had old paperwork related to the children. After the earthquake, Hart said, the Haitian government required additional paperwork which Culberth and the group apparently did not have.
Hart went on to say that everyone had the best interest of the children at heart. He said that communication in Haiti is so difficult, further complicating efforts to clear up the situation. He said they are in constant contact with the State Dept. over this matter.
Brownback's office could not confirm a CNN report of a possible arraignment Monday afternoon for the group in Haiti.
