K2 manufacturer faces trial

A Lawrence man is behind bars tonight, accused of manufacturing and distributing illegal drugs. It comes after a raid on two northeast Kansas businesses. As Jesse Fray reports, the situation has put an end to the sale of the marijuana-like substance K-2 in northeast Kansas.

His arrest comes after a raid on his Bouncing Bears Botanicals business in Oskaloosa and a raid on Sacred Journey in downtown Lawrence, a business that's at the center of the state's controversy over K2.

The events have put an end to K2 sales at the Lawrence shop as investigators took their entire supply.

"I'm both surprised and not surprised. I understand that these sorts of things can happen, but I would've hoped, of course, that they wouldn't," says Sacred Journey employee Aubry Gabbard.

Sloan was the distributor of the marijuana-like substance, which is on its way to becoming illegal in Kansas.

Authorities raided his company in Oskaloosa yesterday. His attorneys say it's one of the world's largest distributors of botanicals.

Authorities took many items from Bouncing Bears Botanicals, including thousands of cactus plants from these shelves.

Workers at Sacred Journey in Lawrence say they depended on Sloan to supply the items they sell.

Now, they don't know what will happen to their store without the sales of K2.

"Hopefully the customers that have come into us know that they can come in for many other things, as well, so that's what I'm hoping and that's what we're all kind of praying for here," says Sacred Journey employee Lydia Shontz.

Sloan's attorneys say while the drugs he was selling could be used illegally, he was not marketing them that way.

Prosecutors aren't buying it and say even more charges may be filed against him.

The House bill will have a hearing next week.
