Kansas youth participate in mock legislative session at the Capital

Nearly 200 Kansas 4-Hers gathered in Topeka Sunday for the 5th annual Citizenship in Action Event.

"Citizenship in Action is an opportunity for our older teens to become engaged in how to make things happen with their local government," State 4-H Program Leader Pat McNally said.

The event is planned by the youth for the youth, and planning committee member Ryan Yenni says the best thing about Citizenship in Action or CIA, is the first hand experience.

"[CIA is] also a nice learning experience for the delegates because the do it and experience is the best teacher," Yenni said.

After attending a couple classes on the inner workings of Kansas Government, the 4-Hers enjoyed a dinner banquet with a variety of their state legislators.

The evening's climax came when the group participated in a mock legislative session in the State Capitol.

"To know that our 4-H delegates will have an opportunity to sit in both chambers the House and Senate [Sunday night] to debate bills, and to sit in the seats of those who are making critical decisions for our state that is just a very powerful experience," McNally said.

The young delegates presented pros and cons of several bills and then voted on whether or not to pass the bill.

"Looking at the feedback and seeing how many people just said the mock legislative session was awesome. I really liked getting involved in my government process. Just knowing that you helped them out and they like it, that's what gets me excited," Yenni said.
