Highland Park earns grant to help boost test scores

Highland Park High School will receive grant money to transform the school.

Some of the lowest achieving Kansas schools will receive more than 26-million dollars in grants from a national program. The State School Board chose those schools late this afternoon.

Highland Park qualified for the grant because its student's test scores fell into the bottom 20-percent in the state.

Administrators hope this money will help bring those scores up and improve the graduation rate. USD 501 Communications Director Ron Harbaugh says, "A lot of people have put a lot of hours of hard work in putting this grant together, and it's nice that the Kansas State Department of Education recognizes the grant and the need at Highland Park High School."

The six schools to receive grant money:

  • Curtis Middle School - Wichita Public Schools - $5,996,505
  • Highland Park High School - Topeka Public Schools - $5,867,658
  • South Middle School - Liberal Public Schools - $4,340,747
  • South East High School - Cherokee Public Schools - $1,463,750
  • Emerson Elementary School - Kansas City Public Schools - $2,981,887
  • Northwest Middle School - Kansas City Public Schools - $4,773,306
