Several cars in accident on I-470 in Topeka
Several people were injured after an accident on I-470 in Topeka. It happened after one driver failed to tie down box springs in the back of their pickup truck.
"I just happened to look up and we just slammed into another car," said Korde Bloze, who says he was riding with his girlfriend when they struck another car. "We hit them pretty hard. As hard as we hit them, it could probably be worse."
Extrication had to be used on some cars. "Didn't look good," said Curtis Rogers. His mother was involved in the accident. "I was very scared that my mom was going to be very, very badly injured. I believe she's going to be OK."
Crews detoured traffic off of I-470 onto Gage for a while this afternoon, but the area is now back open.
Two people told us that they caused the accident because they were moving a bed and the box springs flew out the back of their pickup truck. "There is a law that says you are supposed to keep stuff in the back of your truck tied down, and they failed to have that tied down," said Hillary Taylor, a Kansas Highway Patrol Trooper.
