State firefighters go back to school

More than 700 fire fighters are in Topeka for the 27th annual State Capital Area Firefighters Association Fire School.

The conference that started this Wednesday, offers free health screening, fire safety education and the largest vendor display in the state. Organizers have seen improvements in the overall performance with participating fire fighters state wide.

"When firefighters come here, and they get trained to be safer. Maybe not every fire fighter in the state can come here. But they take that information with them back to their department, and make sure that they change that culture in the fire department, a safety issue within the department, make sure the firefighters are safe," says Steve Hirsch, secretary of the Kansas State Firefighters Association.

The SCAFFA Conference will last until this Sunday at Ramada Hotel in downtown Topeka.

Firefighters can sign up at the hotel.
