Topeka firefighters were called out to a home at 3009 N. Kansas Ave. for a house fire this afternoon. The smoke from the fire was reportedly visible from the Kansas bridge.
The fire occurred in the garage of the home and all of those living in the house, including five children, made it out safely. There was heavy damage to the garage and the adjoining house. Estimates have two thirds of the house damaged.
The fire began when the father was cutting metal in the garage. Sparks flew onto a dog bed that was made of hay. It took firefighters an hour to get the fire under control because of strong winds.
