Kansas Army National Guard 1st Sgt. Ted Lawyer has spent nearly all of his adult life serving in the United States military. Out of high school he served with the U.S. Navy in Vietnam. He then served in the Navy Reserves, U.S. Air Force Reserves, Missouri Army National Guard, Kansas Army National Guard and then in Iraq for the National Guard.

A canoe trip on the Kansas River turned deadly. Fishermen were able to pull two boaters out of the rushing waters after their canoes capsized on the Kansas River at about 11 p.m. Sunday. The other two are presumed dead.

The Riley County Police Department is asking for the public's help in locating a suspect in two robberies at local pharmacies. Victims at those pharmacies provided police with descriptions of the suspect, which allowed police to make these digital composite images. In July 2004, Lawrence became one Kansas city to prohibit smoking in virtually all workplaces. Since its inception, few Lawrence bar owners and managers have reported no problems relating to the smoking ban. The following pictures were taken outside a Lawrence bar, It’s Brothers Bar & Grill, 1105 Massachusetts St., where there is no smoking porch, forcing smokers to venture out the front door of the bar to light up.

The Mystical Arts of Tibet

The Tibetan Monks are conducting a sand painting ceremony that has been in their culture for 2,500 years. The painting took three days for the monks to complete and was made for the prosperity of the student union, which celebrated its 50th birthday this year. The closing ceremony saw the monks brush away the sand painting to demonstrate the impermanence of all things. Afterwards, the sand was given to people who observed the ceremony and then a small bowl of sand was poured off a bridge into a small campus stream. All of the photos were taken by <a href="http://www.mmhood.com/">Mark Hood</a> on March 3, 2006 in the Student Union at Kansas State University in Manhattan.
