Kris Vera-Phillips
KTKA Producer, October 2005 - November 2007
Kris Vera-Phillips produces 49 News at 10 p.m.
Kris loves an adventure and this California girl knew one was waiting for her in Topeka with the launch of 49 News.
Traveling must be in her blood. Nearly 30 years ago, her parents left behind family in the Philippines to pursue job opportunities in the United States.
After her family and husband, journalism is her next love. She is fascinated by the art of storytelling. She's excited about utilizing the latest innovations in broadcast and online journalism to produce a newscast that will inform, educate and inspire her audience.
Kris earned her bachelor degree in American studies from the University of California, Berkeley. After working in tech support for three years, she earned her master’s of science from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University.
Through the Medill News Service, Kris worked as an assistant producer for Reuters Television in London. In Medill's Chicago newsroom, she covered the technology beat for Chicago daily papers and produced a weekly news program for Evanston and Chicago Public Television. She also joined the D.C. Bureau of the Medill News Service where she reported on the Illinois and Kentucky delegations on Capitol Hill.
In the San Francisco Bay Area, Kris reported on politics, business and culture for KALX News on 90.7 FM. Kris created and produced a news magazine on Bay Area living. She has interviewed a diverse range of people: from filmmaker Gene Cajayon to House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. Kris also interned for CNN San Francisco and KTVU, the Fox affiliate in Oakland, California.
Kris enjoys exploring Kansas and taking pictures of practically anything the Sunflower State has to offer: co-workers, food and tourist attractions. She also has a new addition to her family, her cocker spaniel, Daisy. She adopted the adorable pooch from the Helping Hands Humane Society of Topeka.
