Anchor

Sophia Spencer is excited to join KTKA where she’ll anchor the 10 p.m. news and report. Sophia comes to KTKA from KCTV in Kansas City where she worked primarily as a morning reporter.

Prior to working in Kansas City Sophia worked as the morning anchor at WJAC in Johnstown Penn. While there, she covered the crash of Flight 93 and subsequent anniversaries as well as the historic Quecreek Mine rescue. “It’s hard to say that Flight 93 was a ‘favorite’ story." The passengers were such heroes and some of the most meaningful interviews of my life were with their family members. It was an honor to cover such an important part of history," she said. “The Quecreek Mine rescue was exhilarating! However, it was sad to see so much controversy later on regarding the movie rights.”

News was a career change for Sophia who studied violin at The Eastman School and got degrees from The University of Miami and University of Illinois. She’s been an active member of local symphonies and looks forward to working with the Topeka Symphony and local music scene. Yes, Sophia can play the “fiddle,” and if you’re nice, just might rip off The Devil Went Down to Georgia.

Sophia fills her spare time with lots of activities and is always up for learning something new. Most recently she took up Bikram Yoga and is excited to join the studio in Lawrence. In 2005, she ran her first marathon and ran the Columbus marathon in October 2007 in 3:44, which qualified her to run the Boston Marathon in April. "It took 3 marathons, several injuries and a never give up attitude -- all worth it," she said. She’s also crazy about skiing and looking forward to many trips to Colorado over the winter months. In the meantime, she’s picking up golf so she can enjoy the great courses around Topeka.
